Lead Consultant - DBA

Sapiens is on the lookout for a Lead Consultant and highly skilled Azure SQL Lead to manage and optimize our Azure-based database infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have in-depth expertise in Azure SQL offerings, cross-platform database management, automation, security, replication strategies, and FinOps optimization. This role requires hands-on technical leadership and collaboration across cloud, development, and DevOps teams.

About the Role:

What you’ll do:

• Design, implement, and manage:
• Azure SQL Database (PaaS)
• Azure SQL Managed Instance (PaaS)
• SQL Server on Azure VMs (IaaS)
• In-depth knowledge of:
• PaaS & IaaS subscription types, pricing tiers, and FinOps for cost optimization
• vCore-based architecture, RAM allocation, and compute sizing
• Azure Storage accounts (Standard/Premium), IOPS, and throughput considerations
• Implement and maintain:
• Always On Availability Groups (multi-subnet)
• Replication, CDC, Geo-replication, and PITR (Point-In-Time Recovery)
• Disaster Recovery strategies and execution of DR drills
• Backup & Restore:
• Utilize Azure Backup Center and Recovery Services Vault
• Design backup retention and recovery strategies aligned with RPO/RTO
• Patching:
• Plan and execute SQL Server and OS patching
• Conduct pre/post patch validation, monitoring, and rollback automation
• DevOps & Automation:
• Integrate Azure DevOps pipelines for CI/CD of database changes
• Automate routine tasks with PowerShell and Azure CLI
• SQL Server Agent & Jobs:
• Design, schedule, and monitor SQL Server Agent Jobs
• Set up alerting, logging, and Database Mail notifications for job failures
• Security & Compliance:
• Implement role-based access control (RBAC) using Azure AD, Managed Identities, and Service Principals
• Use Azure Key Vault for secrets and encryption key management
• Configure Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and monitor decryption status
• Apply Dynamic Data Masking, row-level security, and least privilege principles
• Ensure adherence to GDPR and data privacy regulations
• Monitoring & Performance:
• Use Query Store, DMVs, and Azure Monitor for query tuning and deadlock resolution
• Maintain and optimize indexes and statistics
• Implement and manage SQL Server Maintenance Plans
• Install, configure, and troubleshoot Data Tools:
• SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
• SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
• Manage deployments, permissions, and service-related issues
• Optimize and troubleshoot package execution, report rendering.
• Azure Databricks
• Provision and configure Databricks Workspaces
• Manage clusters, notebooks, access control, and job scheduling
• Integrate with SQL and big data pipelines as part of the data platform

Cross-Platform Database Expertise

Azure PostgreSQL

• Administer Azure PostgreSQL Single Server and Flexible Server
• Implement logical replication for read scaling and high availability
• Monitor replication health and troubleshoot lag or failures
• Perform configuration, performance tuning, and disaster recovery planning

Azure MySQL

• Administer Azure MySQL Single Server and Flexible Server
• Configure and maintain read replicas for performance and DR
• Monitor and resolve replication health issues
• Handle installations, tuning, and high availability design

MongoDB (Cloud/Atlas)

• Basic to intermediate administration of MongoDB Atlas
• Perform user/role management, backup setup, and cluster configuration
• Monitor cluster performance and enforce security practices

Enterprise & ITSM Practices

• Participate and lead in Incident, Change, and Problem Management processes
• Coordinate with application, cloud, and infra teams during major incidents and RCA activities
• Document standard operating procedures (SOPs), playbooks, and change records
• Ensure compliance with audit and security controls

Leadership Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of DBAs and database engineers across different time zones
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Cloud, DevOps, Security, Applications) to ensure aligned goals
• Plan and prioritize tasks, manage workloads, and ensure SLAs are met
• Conduct knowledge sharing sessions and upskill junior team members
• Interface with stakeholders to understand requirements, provide status updates, and deliver solutions
• Participate in capacity planning, roadmap design, and strategic decision-making for data platforms

What to Have for this position.

Must have Skills.

• 8+ years of experience in SQL Server database administration
• 3+ years of experience working with Azure SQL offerings
• Strong hands-on experience in high availability, replication, and performance tuning
• Expertise in automation using PowerShell and Azure CLI
• Familiarity with data security and compliance best practices
• Experience with cost management and infrastructure optimization in Azure

Preferred Certifications:

• Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300)
• Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ- 305 or AZ-104)
• Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
